Trinitarian Sisters of Rome
|
|
The Trinitarian Sisters of Rome trace their beginnings to the year 1762. Their foundress was Teresa Cucchiari (Mother Teresa of the Most Holy Trinity) who was born in Rome in 1735 and who died in Avezzano in 1810. As a Trinitarian tertiary, Teresa had received the scapularof the Order and was under the spiritual direction of the Spanish Trinitarians of San Carlino in Rome. On 8 September 1762, she was invested with the Trinitarian religious habit. Then, on 25 September 1762, she and two companions went to Abbruzzo, specifically to the region of Cardinal Marco Antonio Colonna, where she immediately began a teaching apostolate for the poor and the abandoned girls of that area in Avezzano. This apostolate was soon expanded and the Sisters attempted to aid the poor throughout Abbruzzo by meeting as many of their moral and physical needs as possible. By 1765, a second house was opened and other foundations soon followed. The Trinitarian Rule of the Spanish cloistered nuns was adopted and adapted by the Sisters. So it was that the institute of the Maestre Pie Trinitarie or Pious Trinitarian Teachers was born. At first, its members did not take public vows. In 1828, new Constitutions more in keeping with the needs of the times were adopted by the Sisters with the approval of the Holy See and the name of the institute was changed to the Sisters Oblates of the Holy Trinity. The Constitutions were once again revised in 1903 and the new legislation determined that, from then on, the Sisters would take simple vows. Their current Constitutions maintain the full charism handed down by the Mother Foundress, stating it to be: the glorification of the Holy Trinity and the spreading of its cult, and the education of young girl, especially the poorer and needier youth. In 1920, the Sisters brought the message and ministry of their congregation to the United States, as they cared for the children of Italian immigrants. In 1961, the Sisters began their work with the Trinitarian Order in the missions of Madagascar. Their communities there are flourishing. The most recent foundation is in the Philippines. Their membership worldwide is presently some 200 religious in 30 communities. Their Generalate is in Rome, near the chapel dedicated to Mary under the title of Madonna del Riposo. Because of their location in Rome, the Sisters have also been known popularly as the Trinitarian Sisters del Riposo. Be sure to visit their USA website: http://www.srstrinity.com. |
